VILLA MARIA FOUNDER IS TOP KIWI OF 2004

Published:  23 July, 2008

The founder of Villa Maria, George Fistonich, has been named 2004 New Zealander of the Year. The award, bestowed by the National Business Review, recognised Fistonich's skills as a winemaker, exporter and arts patron. Villa Maria has sponsored the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra for more than 20 years, and also the Villa Maria Cult Couture awards, covering arts, fashion and culture. Fistonich said: There is a synergy between the arts and wine, so we like to give our support. It is an honour to be named New Zealander of the Year from such a respected publication.' The company was named as top winery at four major wine competitions this year, including New Zealand Producer of the Year at the IWSC. Villa Maria has also achieved the Higher Level British Retail Consortium Standard (BRC) - a quality standard which covers product quality, safety and legality. Part of the requirement was to adopt a recognised food safety and quality management system.
