Published:  27 October, 2014

Berry Bros & Rudd Spirits is releasing a series of exclusive bottlings of whisky and rum that have been matured for 50 years as part of its new Exceptional Casks Collection.

Berry Bros & Rudd Spirits is releasing a series of exclusive bottlings of whisky and rum that have been matured for 50 years as part of its new Exceptional Casks Collection.

The first four releases in what will be an ongoing series of bottlings come from truly exceptional casks that Berry Bros has either acquired or had in the family business.

Doug McIvor, spirits buyer for Berry Bros & Rudd, said each expression in the range has been chosen to "put its stamp on what is truly exceptional quality".

As they have all been selected from casks of such long age there is only limited liquid available as the "angel share" has taken so much over the years of maturity.

McIvor explained: "Our philosophy when choosing casks for the collection is to provide unparalleled quality; we take immense pride in this. This extraordinary and very limited range will showcase some of the most remarkable expressions we have released to-date."

The four releases in the initial Exceptional Cask collection include a rare 50 Year Old North British Single Grain whisky taken from two remaining sister casks which were bottled on their 50th birthday on December 18th 2012 at 58.9% ABV. McIvor described it as an "extraordinary find".

There are only 472 bottles available, at a recommended retail price of £500.

1972 was one of whisky's greatest years says Doug McIvor

There is also a 1972 Glenlivet Single Malt which has been bottled from two single casks, with 170 bottles available from of Cask #1072, at 53.2% abv and only 40 bottles of Cask #1081, bottled at 46.1% abv. Both are priced at £650.

McIvor said 1972 was one of the classic years for whisky and this release "epitomises" the style of whiskies made in the early 1970s. "1972 was one of the special years for whisky with some of the greatest whiskies made that year," added McIvor.

The final release in the range is a single cask of 1977 'Overproof' Jamaican Rum with only 110 bottles available, at 60.5% abv, and a recommended retail price of £500.

"You won't find too  many rums with this age and quality," said McIvor.

Berry Bros hopes to add further editions to the Collection in the years ahead and has a potential Cognac in mind.

All the releases in the Exceptional Casks Collection are available from Berry Bros or through specialist whisky retailers.
