Dan JagoBIgger role at Tesco for Dan JagoTesco's Dan Jago is to take on a new beefed up role at the retailer, to cover wine, spirits and beer globally.

From September 22, Jago's role will include the beer and spirits division, as current head of that category Gavin Warburton moves to head up Tesco's dairy category.

Tesco said the decision to bring its beers, wines and spirits back together has been taken to "ensure that best practice and promotional planning is unified across all alcoholic drinks categories".

Jago said: "I was delighted to be asked to look after the beers and spirits category in addition to wine. In his time leading the category, Gavin transformed the way we buy and how we sell. He created a brilliant customer proposition and I relish the opportunity to continue his momentum. I am also looking forward to working closely with our beer, cider and spirit suppliers once again and will try to speak with and meet as many as possible in the coming weeks."

Jago has worked for Tesco for eight years, specialising in wine and the broader drinks category. Prior to that he was joint managing director at Bibendum, having started his career in the Royal Navy.

As he took up his global wine role at the end of 2012, Jago told Harpers.co.uk that he relished the opportunity to develop the up-and-coming wine-consuming countries. "Tesco is in many of the emerging nations where wine is still very much in its infancy. China, Malaysia, Thailand, central Europe - there's so much to do, and I look forward to being able to create, in each of those countries, a business that's as complex, broad based and as democratic as the one we've got here [in the UK].
