England's largest whisky distillery gives members chance to own personal cask

Published:  03 September, 2014

England's largest whisky distillery, The Lakes Distillery near Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria, is to produce 60 Connoisseurs' Club oak sherry casks, filled with the Lakes single malt and owned exclusively by club members.

These will be available for either private or corporate ownerships, and members,  along with two guests, who will be able to experience making the whisky themselves and to fill their own cask and see it stored in the distillery warehouse as it matures to become a single malt.

Each cask will be inscribed with the owners name, and members themselves can decide when to bottle the whisky, either bottling it all at once or spreading the bottlings over 10 years as it matures.

No other editions of the the Lakes single malt, which begins production this autumn, will be produced in the oak sherry casks, and it  will not be available in general retail.

The distillery, which opens to the public later this year, estimates that if kept, the cask will be worth over £20,000, based on each bottle being worth around £200 after 10 years.

To be a member of the distillery's Connoisseurs' Club costs £12,000 and includes the unique signature cask, exclusive annual events including accommodation at the nearby 4-star Trout Hotel in Cockermouth. They will also be able to attend the annual members' dinner along with two guests.
