IS IT PAULA RADCLIFFE? NO, IT'S CAROLINE GILBY MW

Published:  23 July, 2008

Caroline Gilby was one of seven Masters of Wine (MWs) who took part in the 20th Marathon des Chteaux du Mdoc on 11 September. The other sexy six (dressed in Superman outfits) were: Michael Palij, John Hoskins, Richard Bampfield, Marcia Waters, Arabella Woodrow and David Wrigley. Bampfield is hoping to raise around 2,500 for Christian Aid and Gilby about 500 for the Alzheimer's Society. To make a donation, e-mail or phone Bampwine@aol.com (01628 638131) and cgilby@cix.co.uk (01525 404431). Sympathy for our poor benighted MWs running 26 miles must be tempered by the knowledge that there were 20 wine stations en route, including chteaux Beychevelle, Loville Las Cases and Lafite, not to mention stops for oysters, foie gras and entrectes. Hardly surprising, then, that French marathon runners are a bit thin on the ground. Bampfield claimed he can distinguish a Pontet-Canet while notching up 80 heart beats per minute from a Grand-Puy Ducasse tasted at 140 beats per minute. The loneliness of a long-distance MW marathon runner
