Specialist Cheshire-based bottler Cobevco, has revealed that Brits will spend an average of just £5.83 this Christmas on a bottle of wine for themselves, but are trebly generous when it comes to buying for others.

Cobevco surveyed 1,500 people in the age category 18-55+ in a bid to understand the markets in which it works in more detail. Its aim was to look at wine trends, and particularly seasonal trends, in the UK because as a bulk wine filler, it wants to understand the seasonal variances in both price and quantity that its producers face.

The study also revealed that although one in five of us will spend less than £4 on a bottle, we're much more generous when buying for others and are willing to splash out an average of £17.79 on a bottle of wine as a gift.

Value-for-money is high on consumers' agenda according to the survey especially as the festive period is the time of year when we drink the most alcohol. It revealed one in 10 people drink more than 12 large glasses of wine each week of Advent.

Gillian Walters, sales and marketing director at Cobevco, said: "This is the season of giving - and these new survey results certainly support that. While we're Scrooges when it comes to purchasing for ourselves, we're much more generous when it comes to buying for loved ones."

She added: "Whatever the occasion, it's clear the great British public is always looking for good value deals on wine. With major advancements in the way wine reaches our supermarket shelves, retailers are now able to secure lower prices for delicious, premium wine, so consumers aren't forced to compromise on quality."
