As we get ready for Christmas we we asked a number of key players in the trade to pick out their two good and two bad memories from 2013, and their hopes and fears for 2014.

 Hal Wilson, Cambridge Wine Merchants

2 Good

1 Cambridge Wine Merchants receiving recognition from the trade for its team effort in the form of eight national awards from Harpers, DRA, IWC and generic bodies.

2 Opening a successful wine bar in central Cambridge and seeing it full of happy customers every evening enjoying our wines.

2 Bad

1 Poor Katie Jones losing her wine to vandals in the Languedoc.

2 Extreme weather events in Burgundy and Bordeaux, late spring and poor autumn damage 2013 vintage for many vignerons (though overall volumes up on 2012).

Hopes and Fears for 2014

Hopes

1  Independents continue to work together to market our USP and learn how to continue to improve our businesses.

2  I hope England has a great Football World Cup run and makes a great Ashes come back in the last two tests. (unlikely I know but that is what hope is).

Fears

1 Duty escalator penalising wine drinkers and threatening indies' survival.

2 Resurgent Oddbins and Wine Rack chains stealing headlines in south of England battleground.
