Jancis Robinson passes the torch as WSET honorary president

Gerard Basset OBE, MS, MW is to follow Jancis Robinson OBE, MW, who served for the last three years, as the new honorary president of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust's (WSET) effective from January 20, 2014.

The honorary title will be handed off at the conclusion of the WSET's graduation ceremony at the Guildhall in London.

Ian Harris, chief executive of WSET said: "My board of trustees and I are delighted that Gerard has agreed to become WSET's honorary president, following in the foot-steps of Michael Broadbent, Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. It is a great honour to have someone who has successfully completed the two highest level qualifications in our industry (Master Sommelier and Master of Wine) as our honorary president."

Basset said: "I have the utmost regard for WSET, and being asked to become WSET's fourth honorary president, following such illustrious names as Michael, Hugh and Jancis, is an honour which I am delighted to accept."

Gerard Basset was born and raised in France and moved to the UK in mid-1980s. He reached his long-held dream of becoming the Best Sommelier in The World in 2010, among several other awards and achievements.  More recently, Basset has opened a new restaurant venture at the Hotel TerraVina in New Forest.
