The UK wine trade will get its first chance to taste wines from what is claimed could be the best New Zealand wine vintage in history at a special New Release Tasting organised by New Zealand Winegrowers in London on November 5.

The event, to be held at New Zealand House in London, will not only feature wines from the 2013 vintage but also include newly released wines from previous vintages.

The New Zealand wine industry is claiming the 2013 vintage could be "one of the best vintages in history" with an outstanding summer providing near perfect conditions for growing grapes, said the New Zealand Winegrowers.

Philip Gregan, chief executive officer of New Zealand Winegrowers, said: "The result is that we expect the 2013 wines to be vibrant, fruit driven and complex expressions of our diverse grape growing regions. 2013 looks set to be a vintage to remember."

In total 345,000 tonnes of grapes were harvested in 2013, up 28% on the 2012 harvest, which was a small harvest by comparison. The 2013 crop is up only 5% on 2011. It is hoped the 2013 vintage will allow New Zealand to get back to its usual status quo in terms of supply and demand after the 2012 vintage left the industry "unable to meet continuing strong consumer demand in established and new markets" conceded the New Zealand Winegrowers.

The tasting will have 164 wines on show from 35 producers representing 12 different varieties and seven wine growing regions. All of the wines in the tasting are produced from 100% certified grapes in fully certified winemaking facilities.
