Vinho Verde reports record export figures

Published:  02 October, 2013

Vinho Verde has reasons to celebrate, with exports hitting an all-time high and the past week marking its 105th birthday as a demarcated region in Portugal.

Exports have increased between 12%-13% compared with last year, a good sign for the Portuguese wine producing region as sales within the country for the year have slowed.

Manuel Pinheiro, executive president of the Comissão de Viticultura da Região dos Vinhos Verdes (CVRCC), said: "We will export around 36% or 37% of our total business in 2013, which are the highest figures ever for the region. This significant boost in our exports has compensated for stagnation in our sales on the internal market."

Harvest started later than 2012 due to a wetter and longer winter, and the quantity is not expected to be large, but the weather proved favorable in August, with warm and dry days and cool nights, which are ideal conditions for developing more balanced fruits.
