The celebrated sparkling-wine producer Guido Berlucchi of Cortefranca in Franciacorta - alongside Ferrari, Italy's biggest traditional-method producer with 4.5 million bottles per annum - has decided to follow Gaja, Frescobaldi-Mondavi and Antinori into the Maremma at Bolgheri. In early August, Berlucchi signed a e6-7-million agreement to purchase Caccia al Piano, a 19ha estate on the Bolgherese road between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. Replanted in 1999/2000, predominantly with Bordeaux varieties, the estate currently produces two Cabernet/Merlot blends made by oenologist Graziana Grassini.
