Laithwaite's Wine has launched its first iPad app after seeing the number of orders its customers place using a tablet device soar.

The independent merchant launched its first transactional mobile app last year, and this is the first one designed specifically for iPads.

As well as letting customers read about the wines and place orders, the digital catalogue will have exclusive offers and a feature to look up a bottle online by taking a photo of it.

Laithwaite's said it took 300% more orders from tablet devices in December 2012 compared to December 2011, while orders from smartphones were up 150%.

Online orders from computers also rose by 15% after it redesigned its website.

"It's great to see the uplift in mobile and online sales as it shows that our customers are really responding well to the development of our digital offering. However, we are not neglecting those who prefer to buy in-person or on the phone - we bucked the downward trend for high street retailers with our shops achieving an 11% year-on-year revenue uplift in December 2012," said managing director Glenn Caton.
