CAUTIOUS WELCOME TO RECORD EXPORTS FOR NEW ZEALAND

Published:  23 July, 2008

Exports from New Zealand grew 18% in the last year, breaking the quarter-billion-NZ-dollar mark for the first time, according to the New Zealand Wine Growers' Annual Report. Chairman of the organisation, Peter Hubscher, however, gave the figures a cautious welcome. Vintage 2003, at just 76,400 tons was much smaller than expected and will curtail export growth in the year ahead.' The reduced production of Sauvignon Blanc in particular means many wineries will struggle to fulfil export demand. Hubscher also called for increased marketing efforts as new plantings come on stream. With much larger future vintages, the challenge is to profitably market and sell greatly increased supplies of our premium wines.'
