Sales of wine in the off-trade have plummeted by 27 million bottles and spirits the equivalent of six million, according to Harpers' sister publication the Grocer's Biggest Alcohol Brands report.

Overall there has been a 4% fall in volume sales in the off-trade over the past year, according to Nielsen statistics for the year ending April 28, 2012.

The report also shows a major shift towards own-label products, especially in wine. Sainsbury's Mondelli moved 121 places up the top 100 to 22, while Tesco's Ogio moved up nine spots. Own-label's share of the light wine category has increased 1.1 percentage points to 22%. It is also up 0.8 points in beer to a 4.7% share, and 1.7 points in RTDs to 4.9%.

But spirits including Russian Standard and Teacher's are bucking the downward trend and showing strong growth, as are some non-exclusive wines and newcomers to the BWS category including Stella Cidre and Foster's Gold.
