Sotheby's "Noble Bubble" sale

Published:  23 July, 2008

Charity to benefit

A sale of what is claimed to be 150 of the 20th century's greatest Champagnes takes place at Sotheby's in London on 6 December. A single magnum of the 1959 Billecart-Salmon Brut, which was declared winner at the three-day Champagne tasting in Stockholm, will be in the sale and is expected to fetch up to 2,000. Serena Sutcliffe MW, head of Sotheby's International Wine Department, gave the 1959 Cuve Nicolas-Franois 101 marks with descriptions such as: "Mega-dimension. Great depth and yet finesse. Perfect composition. Remains fabulous in the glass." Proceeds from the sale of this magnum and several others will go to Mdecins sans Frontires. Other Champagnes include: three magnums of 1985 Perrier-Jout, Belle Epoque; 1961 Dom Prignon, 1921 Pol Roger and 1976 Laurent Perrier's Millsime Rare.
