Here Tim North, UK director for Les Grands Chais de France, one of the largest French wine producers with estates in all the main wine growing regions, offers his advice to merchants on how to buy and then market and sell their wines. My 'road to Damascus' moment with wine came 10 years ago when I was served an array of perfectly aged bottles, which were all drinking superbly, with food that matched. Although I had always had an interest, from this point on I started taking wine seriously as a subject: drinking and buying a lot of it with the requisite research, effort and hopefully some skill. I started a small wine club soon after and have written about fine wine for three years - continuing to love the sense of discovery that accompanies finding a new producer, an over-looked vintage or a region that you knew little about. Oh and I bloody love drinking the stuff.
