Pernod Ricard adds to pricemarked Malibu rum range

Published:  02 April, 2013

Pernod Ricard is to extend its pricemarked Malibu range by introducing a £12.99 70cl bottle later this month.

Pernod Ricard is to extend its pricemarked Malibu range by introducing a £12.99 70cl bottle later this month.

The move follows on from the launch of a 35cl pricemarked bottle of the coconut-flavoured rum last year.

According to the global spirits giant, pricemarking helps independent retailers drive rate of sale as it offers customers value-for-money while still maintaining profit margins.

Chris Shead, Pernod Ricard off-trade channel director for spirits, claimed that in the current economic climate it is more important than ever for independent retailers to be seen by shoppers as delivering and communicating value for money.

He added: "Value does not always have to mean the lowest price - it is about offering a fair price. Pricemarked packs provide independent retailers with a trusted mechanic to offer this value to consumers, while driving profit for the channel through increased rates of sale."

With pricemarked packs becoming increasingly commonplace in the convenience sector, a recent Him! study found that 86% of shoppers would trust the price of a pricemarked pack over the shelf price.

Garnacha for Campo Viejo as Pernod launches first experiential wine event

Published:  22 March, 2013

Pernod Ricard is adding a Garnacha varietal to its Campo Viejo brand adding as it looks to increase the number of its well-recognised yellow labels on shelf.

TextPernod Ricard is adding a Garnacha varietal to its Campo Viejo brand as it looks to increase the number of its well-recognised yellow labels on shelf.

Campo Viejo Garnacha is described as a fresh, light style of white that delivers red fruit characters, floral notes and peppery spice. It will be sourced from old vines in the Rioja Baja region.

"Tempranillo is the largest varietal in the Spain category by far, but Garnacha is the second largest and is in growth. Consumers are really starting to explore so we need to offer different varietals" Lucy Bearman, head of marketing for wine at Pernod Ricard UK, told Harpers.

Campo Viejo Garnacha 2012 will share the £8.69 rsp of Campo Viejo Tempranillo when it launches in September and will also be packaged with a yellow label. It will be housed in a Burgundy shaped bottle, while the Tempranillo will continue in a Bordeaux shape, to differentiate the wines. Pernod is recommending that retailers stock the Garnacha next to Tempranillo.

"It's very unlikely that people will pick up the wrong one, but if they do I don't think they'll be displeased," Bearman said.

Campo Viejo's packaging is also undergoing a subtle change to encourage consumers to trade up. The Reserva and Gran Reserva bottles will include the winemaker's signature and individual batch numbers from July, while the whole portfolio will use more premium paper and gold embossing.

"This isn't about pricing. It's more about ensuring consumers are aware of the different trade up options and making it clear why they're trading up," she said. Campo Viejo currently sells for £1.75 more per bottle than the category average for Spanish wine.

The brand is also holding a four day Streets of Spain event in London's Southbank Centre as it looks to interact directly with its growing consumer base. The free event will feature 12 stallholders from Barcelona's La Boqueria market, food and wine master classes, street art, and a pop up tapas restaurant in the evening.

The event runs from May 3 to 6 and will be advertised beforehand, with a Facebook page to launch next month for consumers to sign up for the masterclasses.

"It's really about getting to our consumers and giving them an experience. We see it as bringing the Live Uncorked campaign to life with a fun event full of Spanish vibrancy.

"We haven't done anything like this before on our wine portfolio but have learned from the spirits side of the business," Bearman added.

Campo Viejo is the best-selling Spanish wine brand, with value sales up 24% in the last year to £40 million, compared to category growth for Spanish wine at 16%. Campo Viejo now accounts for 10% of Spanish wine sales in the UK having grown its customer base and brand recognition amongst its target audience of 25 to 44 year olds.

Pernod kicks off fourth Tahona Society cocktail competition

Pernod Ricard is to roll out its Olmeca tequila brand's Tahona Society cocktail competition for the fourth year. The competition aims to educate bartenders about tequila and it culminates in week-long trip to Mexico.

Local heats are taking place this month in Turkey, Russia and China with further heats scheduled in the UK and across Europe and the US throughout Spring and Summer 2013. Bartenders from around the world can follow the competition and register their interest on the Tahona Society Facebook page www.facebook.com/TahonaSociety.

Finalists from each participating market will fly to Mexico in September 2013 for the grand final and a week-long trip, which includes a tasting and tour of the Olmeca distillery with Olmeca's maestro tequilero, Jesús Hernández.

National heats vary in each market but usually involve a day of tequila training as well as a cocktail competition.

Olivier Fages, international vice-president for Pernod Ricard Mexico said: "Providing support and engaging, educative initiatives for the bartending community is really important to Olmeca, so working with the Tahona Society founders to increase bartenders' understanding of authentic tequila and help them gain international exposure for their mixology skills is a real pleasure for us."

Heinz Kaiser from Dino's American bar in Vienna won the 2012 Tahona Society Cocktail Competition with his 'LaPaloma Negra' cocktail, a Manhattan-style drink infused with cumin-scented smoke, inspired by the late Mexican singer Chavela Vargas. Kaiser's prize was a return trip to Mexico to work alongside Olmeca's Jesús Hernández at the Olmeca Distillery in Jalisco this year.

Brancott Estate releases first limited edition Sauvignon Blanc

Published:  18 February, 2013

Pernod Ricard has launched the first limited edition Sauvingon Blanc for its Brancott Estate brand.

TextPernod Ricard has launched the first limited edition Sauvingon Blanc for its Brancott Estate brand.

It has bottled 3,500 individually numbered limited edition bottles of Brancott Estate Chosen Rows Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010 with an rrp of £35.

The release is the culmination of a Brancott's "icon project" which examined the world's top Sauvignon Blancs with an aim of challenging New Zealand's winemaking and viticulture practices to produce a different expression of Malborough Sauvington Blanc that could "sit alongside icons from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Loire."

The grapes which were chosen to produce an age-worthy wine that delivers great palate length and will slowly evolve over the coming ten years.

"Our understanding of complex and age-worthy natural aroma compounds of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, together with our learnings of the soil types on Brancott Vineyard, has given us a unique opportunity to create this prestigious wine - the pinnacle of our winemaking," said Patrick Materman, Brancott Estate's chief winemaker.

"This project has been, and will continue to be, a long journey of discovery, involving many people working together to challenge every step of New Zealand's winemaking and viticulture practices from the past four decades. The release of Brancott Estate Chosen Rows is testament to our on-going commitment to Marlborough and our pioneering vision, which led us to create the original Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc nearly 40 years ago."

Retailers interested in stocking the wine should contact Pernod Ricard on 020 8538 4484.

Chivas Regal has launched three limited edition products with Italian luxury car designer Pininfarina.

The first of the Chivas 18 by Pininfarina products is an 18 year old bottle of Chivas housed in a blue metallic-finish case with a wood veneer to represent oak barrels (RRP: £105). The second has the same design features but is made with a solid wood inlay and comes with two glasses. The Limited Edition 2 products will also be individually numbered to highlight their limited edition status (RRP: £420). The bottles will go on sale from the end of February.

Only five of the top-end collector's piece will go on display globally and individual pieces made to order. The design is based on a mascherone, the wooden frame originally used to shape cars.

"Together with Pininfarina, we have produced a range that reflects the luxury and quality credentials of both partners and celebrates the beauty of deluxe design. The limited edition range will appeal to those with an appreciation for craftsmanship, history and elegance," said Pernod Ricard marketing director Patrick Venning.

Pernod Ricard reports 'good sales' in Q1 but says growth slowing

Published:  25 October, 2012

Pernod Ricard has reported a "good overall performance" for the first quarter of 2012, despite the "less than favourable" economy and "softness" in western Europe.

Its statement, released today, showed reported growth of 11%, and organic growth of 5% for the first three months of the year, with double digit growth in emerging markets and solid growth in North America.

Pierre Pringuet, the company's chief executive, said: "In a less favourable macro-economic environment we realised a good overall performance in the first quarter. We remain confident in our capacity to continue to grow and are setting a target for organic growth in profit from recurring operations close to +6% for the 2012/13 financial year."

Pernod Ricard's consolidated net sales (excluding taxes and duties) totalled €2.2 million for the first three months of its financial year (from July 1 to September 30, 2012), compared to €1.99 million in the same period of the previous year.

Growth in Asia was more moderate than previously but still strong at 13%, but China (18%) and India (18%) stay the main engines for growth.

The drinks giant described a "marked bipolarisation in Europe", with continued sustained growth in eastern Europe and a challenging start to the year in western Europe (-6%). France has also declined following a duty hike there and the end of destocking.  European sales (excluding France), were stable at €524 million, an organic decline of -1%, while eastern Europe reported sustained growth of 14%.

However, some brands showed remarkable resilience, with Beefeater showing  "outstanding growth", particularly in Spain and the USA. Champagnes also performed well.

The firm plans to keep marketing innovations strong to enhance its ongoing premiumisation strategy. This includes Absolut Tune: "the unexpected and sparkling combination of Absolut vodka and crisp Sauvignon Blanc".
